Call Break Express

Call Break Express is Call Break for four players, each for themselves, on nearby phones. Spades are always trumps, everybody calls the tricks they will take, and a call missed costs the lot.

About Call Break Express

Call Break is the trick-taking game of the Indian subcontinent and Nepal, played for five quick deals and an argument about the scores. Call Break Express puts it on four phones that talk to each other directly: one hosts, the others join with a short code, and nothing needs the internet or an account.

Four players, no partnerships: your score is your own and the player on either side of you is an opponent. Thirteen cards each from a full pack, the ace high in every suit, and spades are permanent trumps - known from the first card, with nothing to bid for and nothing hidden. Then the calling: from the seat after the dealer, each player undertakes a number of tricks, at least one and at most thirteen. Nobody may pass, and the calls need not add up to thirteen. Usually they do not, and that is the game.

The scoring is what makes it. Take at least what you called and you score it, plus a tenth of a point for every trick over; fall short and you lose the whole call. A trick over is worth a tenth, a trick short costs everything - so a careful player calls under what they count. A game is five deals by default, and the highest score wins.

Call Break is played slightly differently in different rooms, so the play rules are settings rather than facts. By default you must play higher than the best card so far if you can follow and hold one, you must play a spade when you cannot follow, and that spade must beat any spade already in the trick - the rules the popular apps enforce. A table that plays it looser can say so in the lobby before the first deal.

Made for the journey

  • No internet, no mobile data. The phones talk to each other directly, so a game carries on through tunnels, ghats and stretches with no signal at all.
  • Everyone on their own phone. Nobody passes a handset round the compartment, and nobody sees a hand that is not theirs.
  • Short of players? Bots take the empty seats, each with a setting for how closely it follows the play.
  • A dropped link is not the end of the hand. A phone that loses the connection can join the same table again.
  • No sign-in and no real money. Install it, open it, play.
