Euchre Express

Euchre Express is Euchre for four players in two pairs, each on their own phone. Order the turned-up card up or pass, name your own trump, go alone if your hand is that strong, and be first to ten.

About Euchre Express

Euchre is the quick, loud trick game of the American Midwest and Ontario, and it needs four people in one place. Euchre Express keeps the game and drops the table: one phone hosts, the other three join it with a short code, and nothing needs a server or an account. Partners sit opposite, and bots take any empty seat.

Twenty-four cards, the nine to the ace, five each, and the next card turned up. From the dealer's left, each player may order the dealer to pick the turned-up card up, which makes its suit trump, or pass. If all four pass, a second round lets anybody name any other suit. The dealer who picks up puts a card away, face down. A table can play stick the dealer, so a hand always gets made, or throw the hand in.

Then the bowers: the jack of trumps is the highest card, and the other jack of its colour is next, and counts as a trump. A pair that takes three tricks of five wins a point; all five, two; a pair that called trump and fell short is euchred and the others score two; a player who goes alone, sitting their partner out, takes four for a march. First side to ten wins.

Made for the journey

  • No internet, no mobile data. The phones talk to each other directly, so a game carries on through tunnels, ghats and stretches with no signal at all.
  • Everyone on their own phone. Nobody passes a handset round, and nobody sees a hand that is not theirs.
  • Short of players? Bots take the empty seats, each with a setting for how closely it follows the play.
  • A dropped link is not the end of the hand. A phone that loses the connection can join the same table again.
  • No sign-in and no real money. Install it, open it, play.
