BB Roll

The dexterity puzzle from the back of a drawer, rebuilt as physics. Tilt your phone and the ball bearings roll.

About BB Roll

A dial, a few ball bearings and the tilt of your phone. Work them through the gaps in the rings until every one is resting in the middle, and hold them there for a second. Tip the phone too far and they roll off the edge.

The balls are not animated. They are rolled: a sphere on a slope accelerates at five sevenths of gravity, loses speed to friction and to the air, climbs the lip of a groove only if it is moving fast enough, and knocks its neighbours aside with the bounce its material would really have. Steel on plastic skitters. Nylon on wood crawls. Wood on wood barely wants to move at all.

Four levels change the maze, the number of balls and what everything is made of, from two balls and one ring to five balls and three. Practice has no objective and decides nothing for you: pick the balls, the board, the friction, the sensitivity, the spacing of the grooves, and just roll.

Every maze is generated, so the gaps are somewhere new each time. One worth keeping can be saved by name and loaded again whenever you want it.
