Nessaid Brick Game

Nessaid Brick Game is the 9999-in-1 handheld rebuilt as an app: a cell-matrix LCD, the buttons set around it in a plastic case, and sixteen games behind them.

About Nessaid Brick Game

Before phones there was a grey brick with a monochrome grid, a cross of arrow buttons and a box on it claiming nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine games. This is that machine: not a menu of games with a retro skin, but the console itself - the glass, the seven-segment score and level readouts, the buttons, and the case they are set in.

Sixteen games are behind the select screen. Tetris, with four, five or six cells to a piece, or four with the drill, bomb and gun specials. Snake. Frog crossing the road. Shooter. Ping pong. Race, in lanes, with free steering, or with obstacles. Tank. Fill, plain or grown by shooting full columns. Breaker. Each one is drawn in the same cells as the others, because there is only one screen and it is made of cells.

The buttons do what they always did. Left and right choose a game; up and down set the speed; the big button sets the level; S/P starts and pauses; RESET goes back to the select screen; ON/OFF is the power and SOUND is the master switch. Everything the console has no button for is behind MENU: the case and its colour, the cell pattern, the screen size, the tune, the language and the guide. The screen goes from 10 by 14 cells up to 14 by 28 - the real console's own is 10 by 20 - and each size keeps its own high scores, because a wider screen is a different game.

The sound is synthesised rather than sampled: every cue is a square wave, the way a piezo buzzer made it, and the select screen plays Korobeiniki.
