Marble Solitaire

Marble Solitaire is the old wooden board: a cross of holes, a glass marble in every one but the middle. Jump a marble over its neighbour to take it, and finish with a single marble left.

About Marble Solitaire

Solitaire, peg solitaire, the thing in a bowl on somebody's coffee table. One move: jump a marble over an adjacent one into the empty hole beyond, and the marble you jumped comes off. Keep going until nothing can jump. The puzzle is to leave exactly one marble, and on the classic English board, to leave it in the middle where the first gap was.

Five boards, from the 33-hole English cross up to boards of 37, 41 and 45 holes. Each one keeps its own game in progress, so trying another board does not throw away the game you were in the middle of; a new game is the only thing that does.

Undo goes back as far as you like, because the game is its list of moves - and so is a saved game, which means a board put down comes back with its whole history and its undo intact. Hint will find you a line to a perfect finish if one exists, and, uniquely, will sometimes tell you there is none: it searches exhaustively for the smaller boards, so when it says a position is lost, it has proved it.
