The rules of Euchre

Four players in two partnerships, partners sitting opposite. The pack is 24 cards, the nine to the ace of each suit, and everybody has five.

Making trump. The dealer turns up the next card. Round the table from the dealer's left, each player may order the dealer to pick it up, which makes its suit trump, or pass. If all four pass, the card is turned down and it goes round again: now each player may name any other suit as trump, or pass. With stick the dealer on, the dealer may not pass the second time; with it off, a hand nobody makes is thrown in and the deal moves on. A dealer who picks up the card puts one away, face down.

The bowers. The jack of trumps is the right bower, the highest card. The other jack of the same colour is the left bower, the second highest, and it is a trump: it follows trump and not its own suit. Then come the ace, king, queen, ten and nine of trumps. In the other suits the ace is high and the nine low.

Play. The player on the dealer's left leads. Follow suit if you can; if you cannot, play anything. The highest trump takes the trick, or else the highest card of the suit led, and the winner leads the next.

Going alone. Whoever makes trump may go alone: their partner puts their cards down and sits the hand out.

Scoring. The side that made trump needs three tricks. Three or four score one; all five, a march, score two, or four alone. Fewer than three and they are euchred: the other side scores two. The first side to ten wins, unless the table plays to five or seven.
